A nice malty beer will highlight the sweet, caramel, toffee and nutty characters that come from the malted barley. Our Märzen, a GB year round favorite, is auburn-hued with a smooth caramel malt finish and is our malty flagship, as well as our best-selling beer of all time. Food pairings: Grilled food is the perfect companion to a nice malty brew. Unique flavors from warmer ale fermentations are the hallmark of this category. Sometimes these beers have added fruit and spices, but the German Hefeweizen or Belgian yeast may impart flavors such as apples, bananas, cherries and oranges, and can be combined with spices of pepper, cloves and coriander. Food pairings: You can't really go wrong pairing a dish with a fruit or spiced beer, as the aromas and flavors from the ale yeast are going to do a lot of the heavy lifting. A fruitier beer goes fantastic with our Tuscan Kale Salad, while a spiced beer will pair amazingly well with the basil in the Bruschetta Chicken. Style examples: Weissbier, Saison, Belgian Tripel.
Hoppy beers emphasize the contribution of the hop flower. They are higher in bitterness, and use the oils from the hops to accentuate the spicy, fruity, herbal, floral or piney aromas. Food pairings: Hoppy beers tend to emphasize certain flavors in foods, like spicy dishes, and can also be the balancing act in others. Not all dark beers are created equal. Beers derive their dark color and flavors of chocolate and coffee from the use of roasted malts, but can vary greatly from light in body to thick and heavy. Dark beers also go well with desserts like our Triple Chocolate Brownie, complementing chocolate and other sweet flavors, so skip the coffee this time.
